The family and I recently went on a trip to the Primland Resort in Virginia and one of the activities we got to do is go on a hunt! This was the very first hunt that we took the kids on and it couldn’t have been more imperfectly perfect! 😂 The kiddos are just learning the ropes so it’s safe to say we weren’t the quietest or most strategic, but the family bonding will last a lifetime!
To help y’all out on your hunts with your kids, here are the top three tips I learned from hunting with Leni & Boone!
Dress for Success: Layers, Gear, and Comfort
Dressing the kids properly is a MUST for happy little campers. It’s essential to keep them comfortable for the weather and the circumstances.
Get the Right Size: While you might think your old camo is good enough for a day of hunting with the kids.. think again. I’ve learned that Leni & Boone are the most comfortable in camo that is tailored for their size. Below, I put together all my top Bass Pro Shops picks for kids!
Layered Clothing: Prepare for all kinds of weather by dressing in layers. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat away from the skin, add insulation for warmth, and finish with a waterproof and windproof outer layer. This allows everyone to adjust to changing temperatures easily.
Comfortable Footwear: Invest in comfortable, waterproof, and durable boots suitable for the terrain. Make sure they fit properly to prevent blisters and discomfort during long walks. Encourage kiddos to break in their boots before the trip too!
Safety Gear: This is so so important for every hunter! Make sure your little ones are wearing blaze orange in the field and ear muffs if you’re shooting. I LOVEEEE these kids’ ones from Walker’s.

Snack Smart: Fueling the Adventure
I can’t say this enough, BRING SNACKS! We don’t want any hangry babies because then no one will be happy on the hunt. I pack a small bag of snacks that will satisfy them for those long hunting blind sits.
Portable and Nutrient-Dense Snacks: Pack a variety of snacks that are easy to carry, require minimal preparation, and provide sustained energy. I like to pack nuts, trail mix, energy bars, and dried fruits. Avoid loud and crunchy snacks like carrots because we don’t to spook the deer!
Hydration is Key: In addition to snacks, keep everyone well-hydrated. Bring reusable water bottles and consider flavored water or electrolyte drinks (I like MTN OPS Hydrate) to entice kids to stay hydrated.
Fun Snacking Rituals: Turn snack breaks into a fun break that they can look forward to. Designate a specific spot to rest or time to enjoy snacks and share observations. Use this time to discuss the day’s adventures and plan the next steps, keeping the atmosphere positive and engaging.
Ignite Excitement: Make it Fun!
Let’s be real…hunting requires PATIENCE. Something that kids can definitely lack. So it’s a must to keep things fun and engaging so they don’t lose interest.
Play “I Spy”: While yes, this goes against the “quiet” rule, sometimes you have to break it to keep the kids entertained. See what they can spot in their natural surroundings (using their binos!) and then you can educate them on the different types of trees, tracks, animals, etc.
Nature Journaling: Give each child a coloring book that is geared towards nature. Depending on their age, encourage them to document their observations, color, or jot down interesting facts. This not only enhances their appreciation for nature but also serves as a cute personalized keepsake from the trip. This is something I would do on a long hunting trip!
While we weren’t successful, this hunt will go down as one of my favorites because it was the first hunt as a family. From well-planned snacks to appropriate clothing and fun activities, you’ll create a positive and memorable outdoor experience for your kids. So, gear up, pack smart, and get ready for an unforgettable journey into the wild with your kids!
I commend y’all on time spent with family. My children, who are grown with children, will always remember the hunts I took them on. Good deal!
