Hey Mamas (and non-mamas, who like quick hairstyle hacks!) – this one’s for YOU!!!! Boys – save yourself some time and stop reading this now. This is my go-to hairstyle for basically everything these days since it takes less than five minutes and always looks “done”, even if I haven’t washed my hair in awhile (Mom Truth #1: my hair rarely sees shampoo these days unless it’s in powder form or I just got off the Peloton!!). I get more requests for this blog than anything else, so here it is… you are going to laugh when you see how I do it!
Mom Truth #2: I have SUPER thin hair (my family calls it ‘chickadee fluff’ because it’s so baby fine) but I’ve always LOVED fun hairstyles so if you ever see me with nice, thick hair, I can promise you that I’m wearing extensions. The secret is OUT! I’ve tried them all, tape-ins, beads, and temporary but my favorite are the clip-ins because they’re easier on my hair and I can choose when to wear them. My absolute favorite clip-in extensions are the Barefoot Blonde Classic set (21 inches) in the color “Honey Dipped” because the seam is so small, you can’t see if under your hair at all when you wear your hair down. But for the Mom-Bun, there are lots of great brands out there that are slightly less expensive. My other go-to brand is Euronext in Dark Blond Frost (18 inches). You can shop both of these extension options (and everything I’m wearing in this blog) by clicking the thumbnail images below (make sure you click the photo of the item, not the Pinterest graphic logo)!
If you plan to use the extensions often, my advice would be to get the real hair (vs the synthetic options that feel and look very fake, very quickly) and take care of it properly (wash, brush etc) and it should last for a long time. If you have thin hair like me, whether you use real hair extensions or synthetic, the key is to get them long enough. I suggest 18+ inches, so you have enough to wrap around the bun.
Another thing… if you have naturally long, thick, luscious hair, I hate you. Kidding… kind of. But actually, I’m sure you can follow the same basic steps, minus the extensions, of the 4-Minute-Mom-Bun and will get the same results. I’ve obviously never tried it with thick hair, so you’ll have to test it out and let me know if it works!! So here it goes…
Step 1: Wash and blow-dry that hair, mama! (Or if you’re short on time like me, spray that hair down with a lot of dry shampoo)
Step 2: I’m a Texan at heart so I LOVE me some hair volume! Tease, tease, tease it! Unless you want it slick to your head, then skip this step. Slick hair makes me look like a baby seal so I’m on #TeamTease all the way.
Step 3: Take a hair elastic and tie your hair in a high bun so the bun itself is wrapped as tight/small as possible. Lightly pull any portions of hair around your scalp that you want to have more volume or if you want to pull-out some pieces to frame your face, now is the time! I like volume on the top so I make sure I loosen some of the hair on top of my head so it’s not too flat.
Step 4: Depending how much volume you want/need, get your hair extensions ready. I usually use 2-3 wefts that are 4-6 inches wide each, but you might need more/less for your preferred Mom-Bun size. Clip one weft at a time around the base of your bun. Stack each weft on top of each-other around the base until they’re all clipped in. All the extensions should be hanging long like a ponytail at this point.
Step 5: Start wrapping the “ponytail” around the bun somewhat loosely so it covers the tight bun underneath. Sometimes I have to try it a couple times so it sits how I want it to and hides my real hair underneath.
Step 6: Bobby-pin the bun in place and lightly pull out parts of the bun until it’s as loose as you want. I like mine to look a bit messy rather than perfectly in place. Spray that baby with hair-spray and TA-DAAAAAAA!
4-Minute-Mom-Bun complete! It’s actually the easiest thing ever and literally takes me just a few minutes but SO many of you have asked for my “secret”, so now you have it. It’s not rocket science, but it sure comes in handy when you need to look “put-together” with very little time… which is basically my entire life.
Let me know if you try it! Does anyone else have any hair secrets I should know about?? Or, since we’re talking secrets, does anyone have expert tips for thin hair? Mine needs some serious TLC so send me alllllll the hair advice!
xx Eva

I am SO glad you posted this…..I struggle with the same thing……makes me feel better, somehow, that you always have such a positive happy outlook on things. Particularly things like this, that twang your self esteem lol
??????
I laughed way to hard at the baby seal comment, because same!
Thanks for the tips! I’m so trying this. It’d be a nice do for work too!
Genius!!! I have super thin hair as well, but love me a mama bun! Thank you for posting a hack that works for people with non-maybelline hair.??
Thank you Eva for sharing! What a resourceful Mama and friend you are to us. I also have chickadee fluff…super thin hair. Can’t wait to try this and will let you know how it goes! #lovethewayyouwrite
Morning Eva, I can’t wait to try the mom bun. I have a question….. where did you get your necklace? I think you said at one point that it has Leni’s name on it? My daughter just had a baby and I wanted to get her a necklace with the baby’s name on it. Your family is in my prayers with the storm approaching. ?
She links the necklace in the pictures under the blog post 🙂
The link to it is above ?
I’m not sure if Eva replied or not, but I have one with my son’s name and birthstone on it and I got it from http://www.mynamenecklace.com.
Thanks for sharing Eva! I also have very thin hair and I’m #Teamtease as well.
Thank you!! What Lululemon scrunchie do you wear??
Holy moly, I use clip in extension all the time. I never thought of using them way for a bun. I always put them in upside down so the hair was fuller. This is genius. Thank you for sharing. P.S. dry shampoo is definitely a mama much needed tool. Haha
Eva! So glad you posted this! I have thin baby hair too, but a lot of it, so the minute it’s not fresh and clean it really looks limp and sad. I live for the day 2 mom bun with dry shampoo! My newest hack (which I would’ve bet money was your trick with that plump bun) is a hair donut! I just got one at Ulta for like $4 and I’m OBSESSED! And when my hair is flat, I’ll French braid from my forehead back to the high ponytail, then use the donut to make a really pretty and slightly messy bun. It lasts aaallll day long playing with my 2 toddlers and in the Georgia heat. All hail the mom bun! Love your blog, keep it up mama!
Love this! I use an old sock, with the toe part cut out (glamorous, I know) rolled up to make a similar bun style! Kind of hard to explain, but, my hair is super thin as well, so the sock makes it look like I have a whole head of hair wrapped up there 🙂
“Slick hair makes me look like a baby seal” So funny! I love big hair too!
I have lots of hair but my buns never turn out that good lol. I put mine in a bun then repeat another hair tie over the top so it’s not crazy wild lol.
What brand of dry shampoo do you use?
Ah! Yes, the long awaited Mom Bun Post! Awesome.
I do wonder if it’s heavy on a persons head… I’m going to try this tonight to see!
Thanks for spilling your secret! Are you wearing extensions when you braid your hair for hunting? I have fine hair too and it’s always a complete mess when I’m up early to sit in the blind. Would love to sport a braid but when I try it looks like a rat tail. ?
Where did you get your shoes?! ?
HALLELUJAH!! Thank you for this post!! Love me a good Mom bun!
When you use the Lulu hair scrunchy, is the process the same with the extensions and but the scrunchy on top or is that used with your normal hair? It still looks like a thick full bun but those scrunchies are big too.
It’s usually just my natural hair. The scrunchie makes it looks like there’s a lot more hair than there really is. Sometimes I have extensions in it, but usually not.
Hilarious that this is your most requested blog! Priorities right?! But I’m actually pumped that you posted it! I have super skinny hair too! Im always struggling to make buns and braids look nice! I think these questions have been asked but I’m wondering too… how do you make your braids look awesome and what kind of dry shampoo do you use?
Thanks! Your an inspiration, love following your stories!
I always use extensions for braids. My favorite dry shampoo is Rockaholic (it’s black with a bright green cover). I find it’s the best for volume in my hair.
What makeup box do you us?? and where are your shoes from!!!
Do the barefoot clip ins feel heavy in your hair at all or are they barely noticeable? I too, have super fine hair and am struggling to find an extension I like.
The Barefoot Blonde brand is by far the lightest-weight I’ve ever found. They are awesome!!
How would you do this without extensions? Since you don’t have the hair to wrap around the bun?
You’d have to have enough natural hair to make it work. If you have long, thick hair, you should be able to just tease your hair like I did, tie it in a ponytail and then wrap it loosely and bobbypin it. Then pull it out a bit so it’s loose/messy. I don’t have long/thick hair so I’ve never tried it but I’m sure this would work!
Hi Eva! Thanks for the post 🙂 Cant wait to try. Have you thought about adding callogen to your coffee or morning smoothies? I recently started adding it to my coffee and have noticed my hair is thickening again as it was starting to thin some. Also, Kaitlyn Bristow posted a callogen she uses as she had hair loss from stress after Bachelorette and it’s helped her. I use Dr Axe but there are so many types on the market. Good luck!
I’m not a mom, but I throughly enjoyed this blog post Eva!! I also have super thin, fine baby hair so trust me I know the struggle. Maybe once I get some extensions (for my wedding) I will give this a try! ❤️
Have you ever tried Aquage Uplifting Foam? It’s the best. I’ve had some of my clients use it that have thin hair and it makes it look fuller and you get tons of volume out of it! Let me know if you’d like a tutorial! 🙂
With Love,
Kelly Nuveman
I always wondered how you perfected the mom bun! I love it! I also read your other post about Leni and finding out you have PCOS. My daughter, Emerson was born shortly after Leni and we too conceived her through the help of fertility doctors near where we live because I have PCOS. Turns out, our thin hair is a common side effect of the dreaded PCOS! When I started to notice my hair thinning, my doctor told me it was androgenic alopecia, aside from being on birth control pills, there wasn’t much I could do. One thing I did find that helps a bit is using Nioxin shampoo and conditioner -it helps in stripping the DHT from the hair follicles. I used it before I was pregnant with Emerson and started using it again after I was done breastfeeding. Thought I’d share 🙂
My grandpa always asks when he sees a woman with a bun. “Is there a bees ? nest under that? Or just a Wild Honey? Lol. Now I always think of that when ever I see a bun. I’d probably get slapped if I actually said that to a woman. Lol but not my 90 year old Grampa.
