Okay y’all, today we’re heading downstairs for the final lake house tour, and honestly, this level might be my favorite transformation.
When we first walked through this space, I could already picture it. Sandy feet padding across the floors. Cousins piled on the couch after a long day on the water. Early risers sneaking downstairs for quiet coffee before the house wakes up.
From the beginning, I wanted this lower level to feel like a true lake house guest retreat, warm, welcoming, and completely cozy.
And now? It finally does.

If you know me, you know I typically love a light, bright, white-on-white moment. However, being downstairs — closer to the water and naturally a little darker — inspired me to lean into something moodier.
And y’all… I’m SO glad I did.
We added shiplap to the fireplace along with natural wood paneling on the built-ins to bring warmth and texture. Everything was painted Mild Steele (SP43) from Spectrum Paint, which gives the room depth without feeling heavy.
In addition, the custom wooden mantle from Raleigh Reclaimed completely anchors the space. It adds that organic, slightly weathered look that feels right at home in a rustic lake house.
One of my favorite additions? The ceiling fan from Circa Lighting. Not only is it beautiful, but it’s also practical for humid lake days.
We also swapped the cabinet hardware to Top Knobs’ Aspen Flat Sided Pull (C-C) in Silicone Bronze Light. That subtle metallic pop makes the built-ins feel elevated without overpowering the moody design.
As a result, this space now feels like the ultimate wind-down spot — perfect for post-boat naps, movie nights, and late-night card games.
I stepped a little out of my comfort zone here going more moody and rustic than my usual white-on-white style and honestly, I’m SO obsessed with how it turned out!

Although we didn’t do a full kitchen renovation downstairs, the smaller updates made a huge impact.
First, we added matte black pendant lighting from Circa Lighting. Instantly, the kitchen felt more intentional and cohesive.
Next, we updated the cabinet hardware in flat black for a modern farmhouse feel that ties into the living room’s rustic tones.
However, my favorite feature isn’t decorative — it’s functional.
We created a cozy coffee station and snack basket because peaceful lake mornings matter. There’s something sacred about early light on the water, and I wanted guests to experience that slow start to the day.

One of the things I love most about this lower level is that it includes two guest bedrooms and two guest bathrooms. That layout makes hosting so much easier.
Since we carried darker tones in the living areas, we decided to keep the bedrooms simple and bright. All they needed was a fresh coat of Spectrum Paint Fresh White (SP4).
Meanwhile, black furniture sets and simple bedding keep the rooms cohesive with the overall lake house design style.
Ultimately, these spaces feel calm, clean, and ready for long summer weekends.
The first bathroom leans neutral and slightly beachy.
We used the Belton Four Light Wall/Bath Sconce from Circa Lighting, paired with Top Knobs’ Aspen II Flat Sided Pull and Hollin Cup Pull in Brushed Satin Nickel.
Because these pieces feature softly rounded edges and brushed finishes, they feel timeless and relaxed.
To tie everything together, we added the Rora Mirror from Uttermost, wrapped in natural woven banana plant. That texture brings warmth and dimension — especially against the lighter palette.

Now let’s talk real life.
The downstairs sliding glass doors open directly to the lower patio and dock stairs. Because of that, we’re in and out alllll day long — wet towels, flip flops, life jackets… you name it.
So, I knew we needed a functional drop zone.
We created a built-in bench painted to match the living room built-ins. In addition, we installed Hillmont Hooks in flat black for hats and towels after a LONGGG day in the sun.
It’s practical. It’s pretty. And most importantly, it keeps the chaos somewhat contained.

Ultimately, this cozy lake house guest retreat feels like its own little sanctuary. It’s peaceful in the mornings, lively in the afternoons, and warm at night.
And honestly, watching the kids grow up jumping off that dock is what makes all of it worth it.
