Y’aaaaaall, the time has come!!! I’m beyond excited to share the newest addition to our lil homestead – our stunning new chicken coop from Carolina Coops! Our chickens (Cindy included) are officially living in chicken luxury, and I can’t wait to tell y’all aaaaall about it. When we were considering getting chickens, Tim and I knew we wanted something that was going to look beautiful on our property for a LONG time, so I did my research to find a company that makes top notch products that with withstand alllll the elements and keep its beauty for years and years and YEARS to come.
Today I’m sharing my TOP TEN favorite features of my Carolina Coops chicken coop that makes having chickens a BREEZE, not only for me, but also for our kiddos! Nothing makes this mama’s heart happier than getting her kiddos involved in homesteading! Don’t just take it from me — check out this recent video from Carolina Coops for an overview of everything you need to know about their Carolina Coop design.
Running out to the coop every morning to check on our eggs has seriously become the hiiiighlight of our mornings lately! The easy latch design of the egg hutch makes collecting our eggs every morning SUPER easy and kid-friendly while also not risking predators having easy access to our girls! The nesting boxes are also totally customizable. We can add or remove any dividers to create more or less nesting boxes for our chicks! Plus, Carolina Coops’ egg hutches are designed to be water-tight to make sure your chickens and their eggs are protected in every season!
Y’all, this space is HUUUUUUUGGGEEE. The egg hutch pantry sits right below the Egg Hutch and is an intentional space to store anything and everything for your chickens, from extra bedding to food, all the way to the special treats I keep in stock for my chicks! 😉
Our coop has its own water system – YUP, you heard me! How nice is that!? How this works is that we have a water barrel installed outside the run of the coop. To start it off, we filled this barrel full of water, but then the gutter system of the coop will naturally keep the water barrel filled with every rain so our chicks will never be dehydrated! (We also got water ran to right next to the coop for when we *do* need to fill it up, and boyyyyy am I so glad we decided to run the water – game changingggg.)
One of the coolest features is the Feeder Hopper: an easy feeding system that helps prevent pests, reduce waste, AND makes it easy to get the kids involved! This feeder holds up to 120 lbs of food. Are you kidding meeeee? That means fewer trips to refill, giving me more time to enjoy watching our feathered friends.
I am BIG on quality. I want to know that the things I invest in are going to last. This is a reeeeaaally big factor that led me to Carolina Coops. Not only did I see that their product design was high quality, but they also make sure that their building materials are the best you can get.
Our coop is constructed of two things: hand-selected Douglas Fir lumber and ACRE material. Y’ALL. This stuff is amazing. It’s a sustainable alternative to wood that makes our coop resistant to rot, water, AND pests! This coop is built to last – we’re talking about a home for our chickens’ great-great-great-grandchicks!
As you can imagine, ventilation in the coop is a necessity! I was nervous that this would come at the expense of the safety of my chickens, risking letting predators into the coop. But surprise surprise, the Carolina Coops team already thought about that! They designed the Polycarbonate windows of the coop to be able to be opened while having an inner screen to still protect the chickens from anything outside that may want to get in. (This means I don’t need to shut all the windows at night, and this busy mama is VERY excited about that, ha!)
This automatic door is HIGH TECH. Chickens are an easy target for any predator so you better believe I’m going to protect them as best as I possibly can. Our Chicken Guard door is set to open and close in accordance with the light levels each day. What this means is that when it gets to a certain brightness level each day, the door will open for the chickens to free range. And when the door closes, it’s closed for the night, keeping all your chickies safe and sound!
Y’all. This feature ALONE has given this Mama’s heart such a huge relief. One of my fears when considering chickens was “what if one morning I wake up to nothing but a pile of feathers left over from a predator.” Imagine having to explain THAT to Boone and Leni?! NO THANK YOU. The team at Carolina Coops has thought of evvvvvvvverything with this design.
With the Predator Apron, a 24 inch wide screen that rests below our landscaping to keep predators from digging under the edges of our coop to get to our chickens. We heard a lot of suggestions being made to pour concrete around our coop to help prevent predators from getting in, but the laying of the Predator Apron is actually JUST as effective while being WAAAAAAY cheaper.
While we LOVE letting our chickens free-range, we also wanted to make sure that they had a spacious area for the times they need to be contained. Our coop is the 6’x8’ henhouse and 8’x18’ run (which we can partition if needed) which provides plenty of space for our chickens to roam and play in their own space! In the video that Carolina Coops filmed, Matt, the owner of Carolina Coops, goes into detail about what the exact mixture of ground cover should be for your coop. Check it out! I linked this below.
This area is actually really cool. This space is the “basement” to the chicken coop: the area set aside to quarantine any chickies that may be sick or recovering OR an area to help integrate new chicks into your flock! (Which means I can get new babies so much easier- BRB, buying more!)
We even got it painted in “Alabaster” to match the exterior of our house – cause you know I love a good matchy-matchy moment! I betcha not all chicken coop builders will take the time to match your house color- Carolina Coops truly goes above and beyond for their customers!!
Honestly- I think this one is mostly an aesthetic thing for me because ARE YOU KIDDING ME? It’s beautiful and I’m obsessed…
This is where alllllllll the magic happens. What was once the most dreaded part of chicken keeping for me, the Carolina Coop team has made into a BREEZE. Not only is the coop designed to be spacious enough for all of our chickens to rest comfortably and lay alllll the eggs, but they also crafted a unique feature called the “deep litter method” which is a 12” deep litter bed, that we’ve added Carolina Coop’s Hemp Bedding to the base of the coop. This method not only keeps odors down, but also requires minimal – and I mean MINIMAL – cleaning. We’re talking once a YEAR!!
The deep litter method helps produce healthy microbes that are SO good for our chickens! Our coop also has an easy-access drop-down henhouse gate that allows for SUPER easy cleaning when that time comes!
I would HIGHLY recommend their Hemp Bedding for your coop. I don’t know what kind of magic they put in this stuff, but this stuff keeps the coop clean, fresh, practically dust free, AND is free of all the bad stuff we try to avoid (ie. chemicals, pesticides, and even more things I can’t even pronounce.). Not only that- but this stuff makes it SO stinkin’ easy to swap out old bedding with clean bedding- grab the old, replace it with new- Boom. No scooping here! If you have chickens- ya NEED to try this bedding!!
Not only are the coops at Carolina Coops AMAZING, but the team is amazing! They go waaaay above and beyond. They even travel the country to ensure their customers’ needs are met. And for anyone looking for smaller options, their California Coop and Penthouse Coop are perfect choices! If you’re just getting started with chicken keeping or are looking to upgrade, check out Carolina Coops’ “flockShop” page for DIY accessories and kits. I am now deep in my chicken era, and this coop is giving me LIFEEE, y’all. Check out his video tour where Carolina Coops owner Matt and I chatted about all things chickens!
Carolina Coops makes chicken-keeping SO easy. It’s been so fun getting Leni and Boone involved in taking care of the chickens. I can’t tell you how much it warms my heart to see them jump out of bed each morning to run to the coop to see if we got any new eggs rather than running to the TV or their iPads. And if y’all need me.. I will be right here in my POLYWOOD rocker, sipping coffee (or wine), staring at this beautiful space and allll the fluffy animals that are accumulating by the week. I’m not mad about it..
Stay tuned for more updates and fun content featuring our new coop. In the meantime, visit Carolina Coops to learn more about their amazing products and services and don’t forget to tell them I sent you!
Happy Chicken Farming!
