The baby boy countdown is ON–not that it hasn’t been since we found out we were pregnant, but he’s coming reeeeeally soon and since my hospital bag is all packed, it’s his turn!! Here’s what I’d recommend you bring for that sweet bundle of baby!
Diaper Bag: When I had Leni, I bought a super nice designer diaper bag with a single shoulder strap that I never even used because I quickly realized I needed BOTH hands for her and the stroller so I opted for this backpack one instead. I love a bunch of the diaper backpacks because they’re super cute, functional, and leave you hands-free for allllll the baby needs. Here are some of my favorites!
Multiple Diapers and Sizes: Despite what they tell you at your final doctor’s appointments, it’s hard to gauge just what size baby is going to be upon arrival. Newborn diapers are GREAT for a baby up to 9ish pounds, but you’d want size ones after that: alternatively, they make the smaller preemie diapers as well! I used Pampers Swaddlers and had zero issues with them. They have the yellow stripe that turns blue when it’s wet which is a huge help, especially for the first little bit as a new mama getting adjusted to doing everything on basically 0 hours of sleep. The hospital will generally provide diapers, but it’s good to come prepared with the a few that you’ll use once you’re home!
Properly Installed Car Seat: Watch allll the car seat videos, visit your local baby stores for classes on installation, and know this: if you’re going to become obnoxiously knowledgeable about something baby-related, car seat safety is worth your time. It’s crazy to think you’re going to tuck a teeeeensy baby into a car seat and drive them home–but they won’t even LET you do that at the hospital until they see that your car seat is properly installed. Skip the postpartum horror of watching your hubs finagle with a car seat and get it done WHEN packing this hospital bag for baby. Also, buy the best car seat you can because a good one is a totally worthwhile investment!
Going Home Outfit: You’ve waited 9ish months to bring this sweet baby into the world, so take ALLLL the pictures of them in their Pinterest-worthy outfit when going home–before they poop all over it. We love sweet baby clothes from Pappe, Kickee Pants, (the SOFTEST!!) and cute monogrammed ones from Etsy.
Mittens: For such tiny people, babies have razor-sharp little claws already! Since they can’t really control their movements, make sure to snag some of these cute mittens to protect their little faces as soon as you’re able to put an outfit on them. I don’t think it hurts or anything, but seeing a scratch on their face makes your hormonal, postpartum self already start feeling mama guilt: and this is a happy time–so just buy the mittens, friend.
Nursing Gear: Most hospitals provide some sort of nursing pillow for you to use after delivery, but I really wanted to use my own! I’ve linked some great options and Milk Snob nursing covers below which double as a nursing cover and car seat cover!
Beanies/Hats: Even if you’re in the Southern heat like me, babies get cold after being all tucked up and warm for the past 10 months! Not to mention their heads are super delicate, and it’s nice to continue protecting them from the elements in this way. We loooove Noxx beanies and Beau Hudson for slouchy beanies and hats.
Unscented Water Wipes: For the first month, I was told to use Water Wipes because they don’t have any chemicals for the baby’s new (and soooo soft!!) sensitive skin. They’re here and they were great – this is a 9 pack and by the time you get through the 9 packs, you’ll probably be ready to start using normal wipes!
Onesies: In the event that your sweet baby is too big/too small/already pooped their going home outfit, bring some spare onesies in various sizes! It’s also super helpful to be prepared in case of a longer stay or just to have them packed and the peace of mind knowing that you’re prepared!! I highly recommend long-sleeved onesies with easy access (zippers, magnets or open skirted bottoms) because you better believe there will be a LOT of diaper changes at the beginning. I’ve linked some of my favorites below as well.
Swaddle Blanket: This was key for Leni, but not all babies love it. I hated tying a swaddle with a regular swaddle blanket so I bought the Velcro kind and it was the best. We started with this from newborn, with her arms in, and then when she could roll, we swaddled her with her arms out.
What would you add to this list? Are you playing the mama waiting game, too?! Let me know in the comments, and make sure to subscribe for the newsletter so you’re the first to know the details when we are home with our sweet little boy!!

Snack! Don’t forget the snacks! Healthy and easy snacks that don’t need to be refrigerated like pretzels, cheerios but also have something sweet like licorice or candies. This is especially important if you have a c section or can’t get in/out of bed easily. Also good to keep up calorie count when breastfeeding! Good luck! Instacart those snacks!
Thanks for another fun baby post Eva! You are such a great mama! I’m currently 25 weeks and have really enjoyed all your baby tips and suggestions.
