Being raised with a dad who hunts means we didn’t eat farm-raised animals very often. Wildgame back-straps with a side of fresh veggies straight from our family garden was a regular meal on the Shockey menu. Now that I fill my own freezer and have a family to feed, we still eat a TON of wildgame but I also love mixing up our meals so we aren’t eating the same thing week after week. For the last couple years I’ve been getting my beef, chicken and fish delivered to my door (shoutout to Butcherbox for this genius service!) and it’s a game-changer. I know their protein is humanely raised, free from unnecessary hormones, and just generally a HUGE lifesaver when it comes to making fresh, healthy meals. This recipe is a family-favorite and it couldn’t be any easier. My favorite BEER CAN CHICKEN recipe is comin’ atcha hot!
Let me break down this Butcherbox secret for y’all because we are huge fans and I have turned so many people onto their service. Growing up we got chicken from a local farm which is essentially what Butcherbox offers but it comes frozen and delivered upon request to your front doorstep. ButcherBox also delivers 100% grass fed and finished beef and heritage breed pork in addition to the organic free-range chicken. There are soooooo many amazing farms (both organic and otherwise) that make animal care and welfare a priority, but there can be some that are not all that invested in the life of the animal itself and I never knew how to tell the difference, which used to make me second-guess buying any meat that I didn’t source myself. When I discovered Butcherbox and how much attention they give to where their meat is sourced from, I added poultry back into our weekly menu, and I am SO glad I did. I have been making a whole chicken on the grill every week to have meat for sandwiches, salads or quick meals, and it is a game changer to have this amazing, affordable, high-quality meat shipped to our door.
